This is very similar to the Simple Cable Cast on but it produces a much sturdier finish with no loopy bits at the bottom. Makes a nice firm edge to flat work or for garter stitch. There are better cast on techniques for ribbing (more stretchy) but can be useful for a ribbed cuff as long as the cuff isn’t too tight.
Start with a loop or slip knot on the left needle. Hold yarn tail firmly with left hand alongside the left needle. With right needle, insert between yarn tail and needle behind your loop or slip knot, yarn round needle as if to knit, pull yarn through and place on left needle. Next insert needle between 1st and 2nd stitch (make sure you go behind both legs of the stitch), yarn round needle, pull through and place on left needle.
Tip:- Before you pull yarn up too tight with each completed stitch, put your needle in behind the stitch then pull tight. This way the needle stops the cast on from becoming too tight. Once you have completed a few rows of knitting, you can ease your fabric sideways and this will relax the cast on. it is especially good for garter stitch which tends to spread widthways anyway.
